Ground School
Basic Keelboat
This is the manual we use for
basic sail training. In our
lessons, we tailor this book to
sailing our one-design
keelboats from the Navy Sailing
Center and Marina in Newport
under the prevailing conditions
of southern Narragansett Bay.
Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club
Ground school is where students are introduced to the knowledge skills they need before
venturing aboard a sailboat. Classes meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings
from 7p to 9p in Building 18, just south of the Newport Officer's Club on Coasters Harbor
Island, aboard the US Naval Station, Newport.

The curriculum is outlined in the table below. Training materials in PDF format are linked
to each topic.
A brochure 2008 page 1 and brochure 2008 page 2 put out by MWR contains information
on the days, dates, times, of the schools and eligibility requirements. When students
register and pay at the Marina Office, they are given a handout of the local rules and a copy
of US Sailing's Basic Keelboat manual - the references for the Basic Sailing Course.
