The Coasters Harbor Yacht Club is fortunate to have six Shields Class
sailboats available at the Marina. These craft were donated to the Navy
through the generosity of Cornelius Shields and other benefactors in the
Newport area, and include Shields #1, Columbia. Although the original
boats were destroyed by a fire in December of 1976, the commitment by
the Navy and CHNYC to acquire replacement hulls ensured that these
boats remained available to active duty and retired military members in
Newport. These sailboats provide members world class racing
opportunities every Wednesday night, as Shields Fleet 9 frequently has
over 30 boats on the line, and they are also a wonderful way to cruise the
gorgeous lower Narragansett Bay with family and friends. Every season
there are both skipper and crew positions available on these boats. If you
